Arts and Culture
- Arts Mid-Hudson coordinates funding and activities of local arts organizations and promotes the arts.
- Bardavon 1869 Opera House is an historic theater located in downtown Poughkeepsie that conducts varied programs: concerts, dance, drama, film, lectures, and children's programs. Interns can be involved in public relations, graphics, fundraising, stage and technical assistance.
- DIA: Beacon is the largest contemporary art gallery in the U.S. It is a short train ride from Poughkeepie.
- The Art Effect is an arts center which conducts programs for children and teens, with a special emphasis on encouraging the arts among inner-city youth, along with an opportunity to learn how to market their finished products.
- Our Lady of Resurrection Monastery encompasses a small organic farm and is known for its specialty vinegars. Interns may help on the farm and/or assist Brother Victor-Antoine on projects including his famous cookbooks. This is a short drive from the college, but students must be able to drive their own vehicle or a Vassar vehicle.
- Tsechen Kunchab Ling Temple is a Buddhist temple located in nearby Orange County. The monks and nuns provide a weekend retreat where students learn about monastic life by direct participation.
History and Preservation
- Dutchess County Historical Society promotes and preserves the history of Dutchess County. Internship possibilities include library and archival management, genealogy, collections care, photo scanning, editing, and event planning.
- Eleanor Roosevelt National Historical Site (Val-Kill) is the only National Historic Site dedicated to a first lady.
- Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum. Interns can do historical and curatorial research, help with exhibits, edit brochures and other materials, and assist in the preservation laboratory.
- S.F.B. Morse Historic Site (Locust Grove). This Poughkeepsie landmark was the home of the inventor of the Morse Code. In addition to the original home overlooking the Hudson, the site has a visitor’s center and extensive gardens. Students can assist with educational, preservation, and other programs.
